oh work.

Work is taking up most of my life this summer, and it’s having interesting side effects! Like…

  • I appreciate any time I have alone at home.
  • I love the feeling of walking into the sun more than ever because I’m usually in a very controlled, air conditioned environment.
  • I so want to hang out with people more but instead I go home, do some stuff on my own, then knock out!

Mmm. The long weekend will be so nice : )

Oh and something from today:

Our Senior VP: June! What do you have planned for the weekend?

Me: I’m going to play!

SVP: What? Play what?

Me: Play! in the sun!

SVP: ??! *look of disbelief* Are you FIVE or something?

Me: (yes…?)

but it’s so true…
Happy Independence Day!

oh daddy. (part 2)

Today I texted my dad saying,
“Work has been exciting today! How are you?”

His reply:

Good, like to hear of that later.
I am too tired to work due to butt pain.

Mannn.. I don’t know if I should be really worried because he’s so tired or if I can laugh because he just called it “butt pain.”

Oh daddy.

Corporate America

is quieter than I expected.

This summer I’m interning at a company called SK Telecom Americas. If you’re Korean you might have heard of SK Telecom cause it’s pretty much the Korean equivalent of Verizon Wireless (mobile telecommunications). The US branch does more of the investment/VC side, business development, etc. Basically what I’m doing is working on a startup website for eLearning–lessons/courses in video form on the Internet, like a high-quality YouTube.

ANYHOO hope that explains a bit. And hope you’re not asleep by now. Haha it’s been fun, but I’m noticing a few things from my first week so far:

1) It’s darn quiet up in here.

Yea, SKTA isn’t huge, and yet we take up an entire floor of a building, so I guess it’s naturally quieter than expected. But maybe just cause it’s Korean? Not everyone here is Korean, but most are.. and that could just be the culture.
I feel a bit compelled to organize “Office Olympics” or something.

2) By the end of the week, everyone starts degenerating a bit.

Regardless of #1, by about Thursday I noticed that some of our senior VPs would go around and kinda chitchat, someone across the way was singing along to opera/classical, and our lunch breaks got a biiit longer than usual.

3) Cubicles aren’t too bad!

I’d still prefer having open workspaces, but I don’t hate em as much as I thought I might.

4) The break room is fun

There’s a single-cup coffee brewer, basically my new toy.

Mini brewer
Haha all you really do is put in a little container of coffee grinds and then press the full-cup or half-cup option. And wah-la you have coffee! There’s also hot cocoa and tea.
Yeah. The more I talk about it, the more I realize it’s really not a big deal hahaha.

5) There is definitely a ‘TGIF’ feel come Friday

Lunch went over 15 minutes? Ehh we’ll live.
It’s 5pm? One hour left! Ohh.. tons of people have already left…
Hence I have a bit of time now to post this blog.

WELL that is the conclusion of my first week at work for now. The daily grind of 9am-6pm is getting to me a bit, but I shall now recharge in Berkeley for the weekend. : ) Peeez.
